Meet Donnalyn Vojta
Ever wonder what the world be like if teddy bears had thoughts and feelings?
Well, Donnalyn Vojta has imagined it. The author has crafted a series that tells a suspenseful story through the little eyes of three teddy bears; the second volume of which will be released this summer.
The Teddy Bear Chronicles Saved in Paris!, her first volume, was published in the summer of 2017.
“I wanted to put out something fresh and unique because I love fresh, unique movies and entertainment,” Vojta said in an email interview. “I've adopted a motto ‘Entertain others as I would want to be entertained!’”
As a fan of fiction movies, she said she thought it would be fun to add her own exciting story to the entertainment world.
“I guess I chose suspense because I love the edge-of-your-seat feeling that goes with them,” Vojta said.
Although her list of authors who inspired her personally is on the shorter end—due to her love of movies over books—Vojta truly enjoys Dan Brown’s writing, and strives to write in the same style.
“I like to have several sub-plots which eventually come together at the end in an unexpected enjoyable way!” she said. “Plus, I love being floored by a plot-twist, so I aim for at least two shockers in each of my books. I want my readers to really enjoy experiencing my stories, not just reading them.”
Even though Vojta is now a published author, she said the path to getting there was not easy.
Her own advice to hopeful authors is this: “I would tell them that if they are truly passionate about it, then they can do it.”
Vojta suggests a writer outline the story from beginning to end, first, before beginning to write.
“The story will likely take on a life of its own that may be better than the original outline. If that’s the case, go in the new direction,” she said.
The next important step: editing.
“Be ready to edit a lot and make sure there are no holes in the plot,” she said. “Most importantly, expect a lot of rejections from potential agents and publishers. Do not let those get you down. Keep trying!”
At least 60 agencies and publishers rejected Vojta before she received an offer.
“It was hard, but I pushed myself to keep putting my work out there, and I'm glad that I did! It's an amazing feeling to have a book published and also have it well-received by the reading community,” she said. “All of that to say to potential writers—it's worth all of the long hours, hard work, and rejections, if it's truly their dream to be published authors.”
